Event Details

 Different types of leaves for classification

This course is aimed at information professionals who have to organise and categorise information as part of their work.  This may mean constructing a taxonomy for materials on an institutional repository, development of a file plan for records management or creation of a navigable structure for a website or intranet.  The one-day course will use different types of classification system and will be based on exercises to practice and develop skills for creating classification systems.

  • During the day participants will:
  • Discover the principles of classification
  • Learn about different ways of organising information
  • Practice some techniques for development of a taxonomy
  • Learn how to use existing resources to create a taxonomy
  • Develop their own action plan for developing a taxonomy in-house

 

Course tutor:

David Haynes is an experienced Library and Information Professional, a chartered member of CILIP and a member of the British Computer Society.  He has worked across all parts of the LIS sector including: special libraries, public library services, government and health libraries, academic libraries and commercial information units as well as on information management and records management assignments.  He is author of “Metadata for Information Management and Retrieval” published by Facet and teaches metadata and taxonomy to post-graduate students for City University London and the University of Dundee’s Centre for Archives and Information Studies (CAIS).
